A mere five weeks after Henry Cavill returned as Superman in 2022, he was replaced. What prompted DC Studios to make the sudden change?
This month has been a rollercoaster ride for Henry Cavill and DC fans. Five weeks after announcing that he would be returning as Superman, Cavill discovered he wouldn’t be doing so. At least not in the near future. Before his Superman joined the expanding DC Extended Universe, the star donned the cape in Man of Steel back in 2013. As well as the far superior Zack Snyder‘s Justice League (which destroyed the DCEU), he reprised that role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Cavill returned to the role of Batman in a post-credits scene in Black Adam after five years of fan campaigns for Man of Steel 2.
How did things go wrong? What happened to Henry Cavill’s Superman in the DCEU, and where will he go from here?

Cavill’s unanticipated departure from the role of Superman is the result of DC Studios’ plans to take the Man of Steel in a different direction than Warner Bros. James Gunn confirmed this on social media, saying DC will make a young Superman movie, which means Cavill won’t return.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Black Adam was supposed to be the actor’s official return to the DCEU. Bringing him back was a major accomplishment for the actor and all of his fans, including Dwyane “The Rock” Johnson, who reportedly fought to bring him back. A cameo appearance in The Flash was reportedly the next step in Cavill’s planned return, but that (along with a cameo appearance by Wonder Woman’s Gal Gadot) has been canceled, once again suggesting that DC movies are about to re-evaluate many of their existing projects.

Currently, the DCEU landscape is unclear. While Gunn and Safran are working on their new plan, it’s hard to get excited for any of next year’s DCEU releases with former headliners being phased out. Do they mark the end of an era, or the beginning of a new one? Despite all this, one thing is certain: Superman will return to cinemas, it just won’t be Henry Cavill.
