James Gunn announced a Swamp Thing movie during the unveiling of the first stage of the DC Universe last week, which will “investigate the dark origins” of the character.

As a result, the upcoming DC Universe Swamp Thing movie will be much scarier than DC’s other films. According to Gunn, “this is a much more horrific film, but Swamp Thing will still interact with the other characters.” According to Safran, Swamp Thing is a prime example of how the DC Universe is connected while still having a different tone depending on the project.

“The final film we wanted to talk about is Swamp Thing,” said Safran to DC. “We bring it up because it’s important to point out that in these stories, although they’re interconnected, they’re not all tonally the same. Each set of filmmakers bring their own aesthetic to these films, and the fun is seeing how these tonally different works mash-up in the future.” Gunn also discussed how Rocket Raccoon was successful in the Marvel Cinematic Universe despite not being a traditional character or even a person. According to Gunn, Swamp Thing will “one-up” that by fully embracing horror.

As of right now, not much is known about Swamp Thing or any of DC Studios’ planned projects. The Swamp Thing movie may be directed by James Mangold, according to a report from Variety. Currently, Mangold is working on the next Indiana Jones film, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and will next direct Going Electric, a Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet, and a Buster Keaton biopic starring Rami Malek.
