Hobbs & Shaw was a hit spinoff from the Fast & Furious franchise, but Hobbs & Shaw 2 hasn’t been released yet. Is there going to be a sequel?
Despite Hobbs & Shaw being a hit spin-off movie, Hobbs & Shaw 2 has not yet been made – although some Hobbs & Shaw 2 updates have been made (thanks in no small part to certain actors returning to the franchise at the end of Fast X). In Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham star as mismatched special-ops mercenaries Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, who reluctantly team up to take down a cybernetically enhanced terrorist. Their spinoff franchise, Hobbs & Shaw, was a backdoor pilot for a subplot in The Fate of the Furious, which was introduced as part of the Fast & Furious movies.
With Hobbs & Shaw grossing more than $760 million worldwide (according to Box Office Mojo), Universal was quick to develop a sequel. Several months after Hobbs & Shaw’s profitable box office run, producer Hiram Garcia announced (via ComicBook.com) that the studio was “extremely pleased” with the film’s performance and that they were “having conversations” about a sequel. The Hobbs & Shaw 2 film has not yet been produced, and Johnson and Statham have other commitments. Is there going to be a Hobbs & Shaw sequel?

The Hobbs & Shaw 2 updates aren’t actually about a Hobbs & Shaw sequel, but they are adjacent to it, as it has been confirmed Dwayne Johnson will lead a Hobbs solo movie in the Fast Saga. After stating that he would never return to the franchise, Dwayne Johnson returns as Hobbs in the Fast X post-credits scene. After Hobbs kills Dante’s father, Hernan, in Fast Five, Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa) threatens him. The post-credits scene sets up an epic face-off between the two most charismatic Hollywood leads working today, and now it has been revealed that it wasn’t setting up Fast & Furious 11, but a Hobbs solo movie.

In addition to the Hobbs spin-off movie, Dwayne Johnson announced that there will be another Fast and Furious movie in the franchise. Despite not having a release date yet, Hobbs will serve as a bridge between Fast X and Fast & Furious 11, so its production will have to be fast-tracked since Fast & Furious 11 will be released in 2025. As the Hobbs franchise has a notoriously messy timeline, the Hobbs solo movie could be released after the series finale.
The Hobbs & Shaw 2 update shared by Kelly McCormick, the producing partner of Hobbs & Shaw director David Leitch, in December 2022 was disappointing.
“We’d love to make Hobbs & Shaw 2,” she said. She explained that all of it depends on Dwayne Johnson’s busy schedule: “Dwayne’s a really busy guy, and he would be the one to motivate all of that.”. So, you know, we’re ready if he wants to.”

Leitch and McCormick are eager to make Hobbs & Shaw 2, but Dwayne Johnson needs to be available for the spinoff sequel to happen. According to McCormick, a Hobbs & Shaw sequel remains firmly on the table. According to her
“There were a lot of seeds planted” for future storylines in the first film. Hobbs & Shaw included cameo appearances by Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Hart — as CIA Agent Victor Locke and Air Marshal Dinkley, respectively — that could be expanded into more fleshed-out characters in Hobbs & Shaw 2. McCormick said that setting the table for sequel stories was “intentional, but not necessarily because we had plans in mind, just because it would be fun to have different players for them to play with [in a sequel].”
Hobbs & Shaw 2 has reportedly been confirmed
Dwayne Johnson‘s partner and closest collaborator at Seven Bucks Productions, Hiram Garcia, confirmed (via TheWrap) that Hobbs & Shaw 2 is in development:
“We never like to announce anything like that prematurely… but we are writing the story.” Since the script is still being developed, production could be a while away, but the sequel is happening. Garcia teased that Johnson and co. have a “very ambitious vision” for the Hobbs & Shaw sequel. When Johnson is available to start work on Hobbs & Shaw 2, Garcia said, “We have some huge, fun ideas of what we want to do with it.”
