‘Lethal Weapon’ fans are celebrating the announcement that there will be a fifth installment of the legendary saga.

Due to the death of Richard Donner, director of the saga, this fifth film has been postponed, but it will finally be directed by Mel Gibson, as Warner’s offices demanded. Gibson was the only choice. He said he was looking forward to new adventures with ‘Martin Riggs’ and ‘Roger Murtaugh’ from ‘Lethal Weapon.’ According to ScreenRant, Richard Wenk is writing the script.

“It’s great, we’ve got a really good script that we’re starting to develop,” Gibson said.

“Well, Donner developed it, of course, he wrote it with Richard Wenk, and they had a very good basis. After Richard died, I had the honor of sitting down with the writer and doing a couple more drafts and trying to fit it into the spirit of what we thought Donner might want to do with the film, because I really knew him very well.”

76-year-old Danny Glover, who plays the one and only Roger Murtaugh, will also return in ‘Lethal Weapon 5’.

“We’ve always tried to get that balance, and we’re very happy with what we came up with. The only delay we have now is that the shake-up at Warner, with Discovery and the new boss, is that they cut everybody and put new people in,” the director shared.

According to Mel Gibson, he is “pretty confident” that the movie will be made and is hoping to start shooting in 2023.

“We’ll probably shoot it in the first quarter of 2023,” he said. As for the script, though, no one knows what ‘Lethal Weapon 5’ will be about.

The Lethal Weapon franchise began in 1987 and has since spawned four films, the most recent being Lethal Weapon 4 in 1998. It grossed $285 million at the box office (versus a budget of $100-150 million), but received lukewarm reviews from critics and audiences.
