The Equalizer 3 is still a few weeks away from seeing an official trailer, but Sony has released the official synopsis. There hasn’t been much information released about the film, besides the fact that it is set in Southern Italy and Denzel Washington will reunite with Dakota Fanning from Man on Fire.

The synopsis is as follows:

Since giving up his life as a government assassin, Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) has struggled to reconcile the horrific things he’s done in the past and finds a strange solace in serving justice on behalf of the oppressed. Finding himself surprisingly at home in Southern Italy, he discovers his new friends are under the control of local crime bosses. As events turn deadly, McCall knows what he has to do: become his friends’ protector by taking on the mafia.

A new cinematographer has been hired – Fuqua’s Emancipation DP Robert Richardson, who wrote the screenplay for the first two films. For Sony, Fuqua’s last two Equalizer movies have each made close to $200 million worldwide. The films are based on the eighties TV series in which Edward Woodward starred as Robert McCall, a former covert operative who helps the needy. Essentially the same plot lines are woven throughout the two films, with Denzel’s McCall fighting the Russian Mob in the first, and Pedro Pascal’s former colleague now a mercenary in the second.

CBS is airing a TV version of The Equalizer starring Queen Latifah as a gender-swapped Robyn McCall. There is no connection between the new show and Denzel’s movies – so far. Our hope is that Denzel and Antoine Fuqua stick with this grounded action series as long as possible. The 3rd installment is set for worldwide release in September.
