Fraser says he’s open to making The Mummy 4 and explains why Tom Cruise‘s reboot was a failure.

Brendan Fraser, the once-beloved star of Universal Pictures’ 1999 The Mummy 4 reboot, said he would “be open to” doing a fourth film and talked about Tom Cruise‘s take on the film. The Mummy and The Mummy Returns were cultural landmarks in the late 1990s and early 2000s, grossing over $400 million and launching Fraser to instant fame. After 14 years since the last film in the series, some are saying it may be time to resurrect The Mummy after Fraser’s rediscovered success with The Whale.

In an interview with Variety, Fraser was asked whether he would consider returning to the Mummy franchise. “

I don’t know how it would work,” he admits. “But I’d be open to it if someone came up with the right conceit.”

Fraser also discussed Universal’s failed reboot of the old franchise with Cruise’s The Mummy 4 film in 2017.

“It is hard to make that movie,” he said. “The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in that film, was fun. That was what was lacking in that incarnation. It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. The Mummy should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary.”

“I know how difficult it is to pull it off. I tried to do it three times.”

The director of 1999’s The Mummy, Stephen Sommers, said in a statement that Fraser was cast for the leading role for the following reasons:

“He could throw a punch and take a punch and he had a great sense of humor. You really like the guy. He never comes across as cocky or arrogant.”

He praised Fraser for doing many of his own stunts, saying,

“He was game for anything we threw at him.”

Fraser disappeared from public life after The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008. He had repeatedly suffered physical injuries from his stunt work and was traumatized by an incident in which he was sexually assaulted. After taking no major roles for over a decade, he took on the role of an overweight father in Darren Aronofsky’s drama The Whale

In one of the year’s most highly anticipated movies, Fraser’s triumphant return to the big screen has brought back fond memories of his short-lived mega-stardom. Universal Studios will almost certainly be intrigued by this, since they’ve been desperate to reboot classic horror properties like The Mummy, Dracula, and Frankenstein, and there seems to be a genuine public interest in Fraser. He went on to earn a Best Actor nomination for his performance in The Whale. It’s not impossible for Fraser to return to the blockbuster Mummy franchise because of his recent critical and popular acclaim.
