We’re in for an emotional ride in the trailer for Brendan Fraser’s drama The Whale, which arrives next month. Watch it below:

In The Whale, directed by Darren Aronofsky, Fraser plays a reclusive overweight English teacher Charlie who attempts to reconnect with his 17-year-old daughter (Sadie Sink). The new trailer opens with Fraser’s Charlie asking: “Do you ever get the sense people can’t not care?” Later, he whispers: “People are amazing.”

It seems that the trailer has only added to the mounting excitement for its release on the big screen – with social media users saying the one-minute glimpse gave them ‘chills’ – after the film’s critical acclaim and two standing ovations at the Venice and Toronto film festivals.

One person tweeted: “I got goosebumps it’s beautiful.”

Someone else wrote: “This film is going to make me sob for hours during and after. I can already tell.”

A third said: “F**king. Chills.”

A fourth added: “I’m crying already with a 60-second trailer, oh my god.”

Fraser’s Charlie struggles with spiraling binge eating as a result of leaving his family for a gay lover, who later died. As the star explained in another interview with Vanity Fair, he was carrying between 50 and 300 extra pounds while shooting the scenes, something he described as ‘cumbersome’ and ‘not exactly comfortable. One of the hardest parts of filming for Fraser was getting into and out of the suit, which he described as “almost like a straight jacket.”

A lot of make-up and effects went into making the suit look as natural as possible, including hand-painted hair and airbrushed sleeves that looked exactly like human skin.

In the US, The Whale will premiere on 9 December, followed by its UK release on 3 February 2023.
