When Sylvester Stallone announced that he would not be reprising his role in Creed III, Rocky fans were shocked. The decision by Stallone to not appear in the latest installment of the Creed saga is like the end of an era for the character who has played the character since 1976. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Stallone explained why he chose not to appear in the film:

“That’s a regretful situation because I know what it could have been. It was taken in a direction that is quite different than I would’ve taken it. It’s a different philosophy – Irwin Winkler’s and Michael B. Jordan’s. I wish them well, but I’m much more of a sentimentalist. I like my heroes getting beat up, but I just don’t want them going into that dark space. I just feel people have enough darkness.”

Stallone is still part of the Rocky spin-off sequel as a producer, but he clearly has a problem with Creed III and its direction. It will be interesting to see how the movie will fare without Stallone, who even in a supporting role is a definite presence in the movie, but as Michael B Jordan’s baby, it is the film that will win or lose the battle based on its own merits when it comes out in March 2023.

Sylvester Stallone is the face of the Rocky franchise, but the actor has had to reassess his involvement in the franchise because of Creed III’s dark direction. The actor, writer, and director of the original Rocky movie, Stallone shared a rift with Rocky producer Irwin Winkler earlier this year on social media. Winkler, the actor, writer, and director was called a snake for “controlling Rocky for over 47 years.” He added that he would like at least a small portion of his rights back before only your children receive them.

It’s not the first time Stallone has mentioned the issue of the character’s and the franchise’s rights. It was “painful” for Stallone not to own the original movie rights, as he “wanted to leave something of Rocky to my children.”

The rights to popular movies have been the subject of many feuds, such as the legal battle over Friday the 13th, but when it comes to Rocky, since Stallone wrote, directed, and starred in it, it is hard not to say that the franchise would not exist without him. Some day, the two parties might reach some kind of sportsmanlike compromise over Rocky’s rights, but for now, Stallone’s relationship with the franchise appears to be on the ropes.
