The 2008 hit blockbuster Hancock was a huge box office success bringing in over $600 million in box office revenue and receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews from audiences (despite not ranking well with critics). Hancock 2 has been hinted at by multiple cast and crew members in the 14 years since it was released but now it’s official, it’s finally happening.

Hancock 2 will be produced by Columbia Pictures, which produced the first film. They haven’t spoken much about the budget or possible filming locations as of yet. Among Columbia’s action films are Uncharted and Spiderman: No Way Home. Fans of explosion-inducing superhero movies will certainly enjoy this one’s captivating stunts and over-the-top special effects.

In order to remain true to the original’s vision, Peter Berg has decided to return to direct the sequel. In addition to Hancock, Berg has worked on Lone Survivor, Patriot’s Day, and Mile 22. There’s no doubt he will bring his refined skills to this production and make it even better than the first (if that’s even possible). He has continued to improve as a director since 2008, and his most recent projects have shown that he can elevate action movies by applying his own unique vision.

Peter Berg revealed in an interview that Will Smith‘s Hancock might be challenged by a different superpowered character in the upcoming story. Neither the character nor the actor who will play them have been announced. Due to the passing of so much time since the film’s release, Hancock may once again find it difficult to live in a world he isn’t meant for. In the original movie, Charlize Theron’s character embodied her unique qualities, and maybe this other character will do the same for him.

This project has been put on hold for so long because, as Berg said, “there are too many cooks in the kitchen.” There are so many ideas on where to take the sequel and who to add that it has become too bothersome to continue. In the beginning, Will Smith was super excited about a sequel, but with all of the back and forth about the script and production, he decided to focus on his kids. However, it doesn’t mean it won’t get made, it just means it’s going to take even longer.

Charlize Theron has appeared in some of the best action movies and has also been vocal about her commitment to Hancock 2. Even as early as 2009, she was ready and prepared to work on the sequel film if everyone else was as well. All three of the main cast members of Hancock, Will Smith, Charlize Theron, and Jason Bateman, have expressed excitement about the sequel, despite the fact that, in the past years, they have all been extremely busy working on other action, drama, and comedy films.

One thing that is certain about Hancock 2 is that Adam Fierro and Glen Mazzara will write the script together. Glen Mazzara wrote for A&E’s Damien and Crash, while Adam Fierro wrote for Dexter and The Walking Dead. Fierro and Mazzara will no doubt create a worthy sequel with Fierro’s gory comedy and Mazzara’s darker tone. The main plot of the story has been outlined, so all that’s left is to wait and see when more of this great, collaborative story is revealed.
