We’re not ashamed to admit we can’t wait for The Meg 2. The first one wasn’t exactly a hit with the critics, but it made more than $500 million worldwide at the box office. As a result, executive producer Catherine Xujun Ying announced a sequel in November 2018. The sequel – officially titled Meg 2: The Trench – has been filmed and will hit cinemas in August aiming to take on its predecessor. The Meg 2 is coming, so here’s what you need to know while we wait for it.
When Will It Come Out
Unless there are delays, Meg 2: The Trench will hit cinemas on August 4, 2023, five years after its predecessor. We should be reunited with some giant sharks in August unless Warner Bros decides to rearrange its schedule. Filming took place from February to May 2022.
Who’s returning for The Meg 2
Obviously, Jason Statham is back as Jonas Taylor, but Li Bingbing will not return as Suyin, his love interest. James ‘Mac’ Mackreides, Meiying, and DJ, respectively, are all returning as Cliff Curtis, Shuya Sophia Cai, and Page Kennedy.

The sequel features Sienna Guillory, Skyler Samuels, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, and Wu Jing, the highest-grossing Chinese actor of all time. As of yet, we don’t know who any of them will be playing. Ben Wheatley directed the sequel, which was written by Dean Georgaris, Erich Hoeber, and Jon Hoeber as in the first film.
How will The Meg 2 unfold?
As far as what we can gather from the ending of the first movie, we don’t have an official synopsis for Meg 2: The Trench yet. In the end, Jonas redeemed himself and contemplated a holiday with Suyin and her daughter Meiying. However, since Suyin won’t be back in the sequel but Meiying will, does this mean something has happened to her? Maybe we are overthinking things if Jonas is on a revenge mission to kill the megalodon who killed Suyin.
Wheatley has teased that there may be more than one giant shark in the film, so we can expect some shark action. There were two in the first movie, so surely it will top that. The first movie was based on Steve Alten’s novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror, and the sequel was called The Trench. As the book featured a pregnant megalodon, the movie wasn’t a faithful adaptation. Following the book’s sequel, Jonas looks after that shark’s giant offspring, leading to another battle between shark and man after Jonas seeks help from an eccentric billionaire.

Possibly some nods to the book series will be included in the movie sequel, but we imagine it will be its own story.
