Director Baz Luhrmann’s long-awaited musical drama “Elvis” (in theaters June 24) has released its first trailer, featuring Austin Butler as The King. Butler is a dead ringer in the film about the life and music of Elvis Presley told through the lens of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic and oft-reviled manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks).  Hank Parker begins the story and the trailer by saying, “There are some who want to make me out as the villain of this here story.”

“The Great Gatsby” director Baz Luhrmann’s film traces Presley’s rise to fame amid a changing American cultural landscape during his childhood. Butler, who made a splash with Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” says taking on Presley was a “huge challenge. “During an event last week with director Baz Luhrmann to promote the trailer, the 30-year-old actor said that after being cast for the coveted role three years ago, he immediately began voice training six days a week to sound like Presley. The thought of sounding like Elvis was frightening and understandable. Butler, finding his mission morphing, said, “That lit a fire inside me.”. In the end, it’s about finding the life inside, about finding the heart.

“Elvis is such an icon, and he’s given a superhuman status,” Butler said. Finding the human within him was the real joy.

An internationally followed casting battle pitted Butler against Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Harry Styles against Elvis wannabes. Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson were quarantined as the first Hollywood celebrities to test positive for COVID-19 while filming the drama in Australia and New Zealand. Parker recognizes the young Elvis’ potential after the singer drives audiences, and young girls, wild. The Colonel goes, I don’t hear music, but I can see what he’s doing to the audience,” said Luhrmann.

In the decades leading up to his death in 1977, Elvis’ unleashed power transformed America. In Lurhmann’s opinion, “(Presley’s) life is culturally the center of the ’50s, the ’60s, and the ’70s, so it drew me to the story.” “And a man named Colonel Tom Parker. “One of the most significant and influential people in Elvis’ life is his wife Priscilla Presley (Olivia DeJonge). Butler shared the trailer on Instagram Thursday, and Elvis Presley’s official Instagram page endorsed it with three thunderbolts.
