The release date for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2 has been announced for late 2024.

A follow-up to Scott’s original 2000 box office hit Gladiator, starring Russell Crowe as Roman soldier Maximus, was announced in 2018. During the film, Maximus is forced into slavery and vows to exact revenge on his betrayer Commodus, portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix. Variety reports that the sequel will be released on 22 November 2024, nearly four years after the original.

Russell will not return for the sequel since Gladiator ended with Maximus’s death. This was also confirmed by the actor in an episode of the podcast Fitzy and Wippa. Gladiator 2 will focus on Lucius, the son of Maximus’s lover Lucilla — portrayed by Connie Nielsen.

Variety reports that Aftersun’s Paul Mescal will lead Lucias.

  1. Russell Crowe played the hell out of that roll in gladiator, so whoever plays in the next one better kill it to win me over on sequels. #notafanofsequels#
