Several controversial moments have taken place at the Oscars, but none compare to that of Angelina Jolie and her brother on the red carpet.

Jolie was awarded the Oscar for Girl Interrupted in 2000 when she was 24 years old. Jolie mentioned her older brother, James Haven, 26, who accompanied her to the award ceremony when she accepted her award for Best Supporting Actress. Suddenly flustered, Jolie said: “I’m in shock, and I’m so in love with my brother right now.

“He just held me and said he loved me, and I know he’s so happy for me. And, um, thank you for that.”

They took their closeness to another level outside, right in front of the media. Jolie kissed Haven on the lips while posing with her golden statue, cementing their place in tabloid history. For years afterward, the smooch generated headlines around the world. Jolie insisted a few months later that the kiss was nothing more than ‘brotherly’ love. She told Entertainment Weekly:

“My parents really loved that moment, and that’s what will always matter.”

As well as the infamous kiss, Haven’s backstory is being investigated. Talking to the Daily Mail in 2007, he said: “I did not give Angie a French kiss. It was something simple and lovely. She was about to go off to Mexico to finish filming Original Sin with Antonio Banderas.

“I congratulated her on the Oscar win and gave her a quick kiss on the lips. It was snapped and became a big thing.”

The two siblings remain close, with Haven reportedly looking after Jolie’s kids while she was working out her divorce from Brad Pitt. In addition to her nomination as Best Actress at the Oscars, Jolie has a history of making grand declarations of love. She and her second husband, Billy Bob Thornton, wore vials of each other’s blood around their necks when they were married. In 2014, Thornton said the unusual arrangement didn’t seem strange at the time. The Bad Santa actor said:

“She thought it would be interesting and romantic if we took a little razorblade and sliced our fingers, smeared a little blood on these lockets and you wear it around your neck just like you wear your son or daughter’s baby hair in one. Same thing. From that, we were wearing quart jars of blood around our necks. “And we were vampires and we lived in a dungeon.”
