The fact that Velma is gay has long been a secret among “Scooby-Doo” fans and creatives. In addition to James Gunn, who wrote the early live-action films, and Tony Cervone, who served as supervising producer on “Mystery Incorporated,” the character has been confirmed to be gay, but it has never been acknowledged onscreen until now as Velma Is Officially A Lesbian.

“OMG LESBIAN VELMA FINALLY,” reads one tweet, which has over 100,000 likes.

During the live-action movies, Gunn tweets that he “tried” to portray Velma as a lesbian. “Velma was explicitly gay in my first draft in 2001,” he wrote. In the final version, the studio watered it down & watered it down, resulting in ambiguity (the shot), nothing (the released version) & finally a boyfriend (the sequel).”

“I know I’ve said it before, but Velma in ‘Mystery Incorporated’ is not bisexual,” Cervone wrote on Instagram during 2020 Pride Month. Her sexual orientation is gay. When Velma was dating Shaggy, we planned for her to act a little out of character because the relationship was wrong for her and she had unspoken difficulty understanding why. The episode with the mermaid hints at the why, and if you follow the entire Marcie arc, it seems obvious. In the main timeline, Marcie and Velma didn’t have time to act on their feelings, but after the reset, they’re together. No matter how you feel about it, this was our intention.”
