Peaky Blinders Movie: Everything We Know

Peaky Blinders Movie is on the way! It has been almost a decade since Steven Knight’s gangster show Peaky Blinders first aired on TV. It’s clear that the BBC show has left its mark, from themed gin bars to men asking for ‘Peaky Blinders‘ haircuts at the barbers.

In April 2022, the show’s finale aired following a delay of almost three years caused by the pandemic and the untimely death of actress Helen McCrory, who played Aunt Polly. Following Peaky Blinders‘ final season, Knight expressed his desire to bring the story to the big screen and confirmed a film would follow. The writer has confirmed that filming will begin soon on the film that has been in the works for several months now. So far, here’s what we know about the film.

According to Knight, who spoke at the BFI London Film Festival, the Peaky Blinders movie is due to begin production in 2023. That will probably be the end of Peaky Blinders as we know it.” The script has been completed, and Knight has confirmed that production will begin early next year, with a potential Spring 2024 release date. Speaking to the BBC Knights said:

“We’re going to start shooting that early next year in Digbeth in Birmingham on location and in the studio. We should have that ready for Spring 2024.

”Who is in the cast? Is Cillian Murphy going to appear?

Despite not being confirmed yet, Cillian Murphy, who plays Thomas Shelby in the show, has hinted that he may return to the film. There is also a report that Polly’s character will be in the movie. Knight has described Helen as a significant part of the show, telling the RadioTimes:

“Helen was such a brilliant part of it.”. When anything happened in the rest of the series, I wanted people to think, ‘What would Polly say?’ It’s like a family when someone passes away, their opinion remains in the house. Polly’s opinion is going to last.”

Knight stated they were in talks with “great actors” for the movie, and wanted to keep focusing on emerging talent. We have already started talking with so many great actors for the film, and for whatever comes next. he said.

“But I think what we want to do is keep surprising people and keep breaking new talent. Because it’s all out there, and there is a sort of consistency — what we’re doing is finding really good actors from a working-class sort of background and telling that story.”

Tommy spends the majority of the final episode, which aired in April last year, preparing for death after being diagnosed with tuberculoma. After tying up some loose ends, Tommy retires, saying goodbye to his family, but then receives a message from his deceased daughter Ruby, giving him some clarity. Dr Holford and fascist Oswald Moseley conspired to diagnose tuberculoma through a fake diagnosis. Tommy decides to spare the doctor’s life despite learning about the scam, and leaves on his white horse, preparing for a new life. Murphy was also recently asked about the script and the upcoming film during an interview with TodayFM in October 2022. As he put it:

“I’ve still not read it [the script] but that’s the plan, the plan is to make a film and to continue the story but in the cinematic world rather than on the television. The television part of the story is finished. If there’s more stories to tell, I’m there. I just haven’t read it yet but it’s close apparently”.

Who will star in the film and what is its plot?

Knight previously spoke about the movie’s plot, revealing it would take place during World War II. According to him:

“Peaky – in this incarnation – comes to an end,” Knight said about series six. “But we’re doing a film which will also carry on the family and the stories into the Second World War. The film, I know exactly what it’s about. And I know what two stories it’s going to tell. How the story will unfold, I don’t know. What will happen after that, I want that to depend on the film. For all we know somebody is going to pop out – I think I know who it’s going to be.”

Knight also hinted at who would appear in the movie during the interview, saying:

“In series six we brought a new generation, and they are going to be part of what happens in the film. I think it’s finding those actors that you just watch and you think, there you go. There’s the future.”

Based on Knight’s comment, Stephen Graham, Amber Anderson, and James Frecheville, who play Lady Diana Mitford and Jack Nelson, all made their Peaky Blinders debuts in series 6.
