A sequel to The Grinch starring Jim Carrey has been announced. Once again, Jim Carrey will star as Dr. Seuss’s most famous and ill-tempered creation in The Grinch 2. As per our trusted sources, the Sonic the Hedgehog star is returning to the role after over 20 years, which is not out of character for him. While it is unclear what exactly Jim Carrey might steal in The Grinch 2 (or what size his heart might swell to), it continues his recent willingness to appear in sequels.

However, Jim Carrey wasn’t that long ago adamant that he wouldn’t appear in a sequel to The Grinch. Having completed 1995’s Ace Venture 2: When Nature Calls, Carrey swore off sequels for a number of years, later saying “I find sequels to be a function of commerce for the most part.” At least the two I’ve done, they were characters I enjoyed doing, but I did find myself almost parroting myself at that point.”
Having become one of the biggest box offices draws of the 1990s and a critically acclaimed actor (after The Truman Show and Man on the Moon) probably didn’t help Jim Carrey’s chances of sequels. Jim Carrey’s career seems to have changed in the past decade, as evidenced by the development of The Grinch 2.
Jim Carrey has recently starred in the sequel to 1994’s Dumb and Dumber (following a 2003 prequel that didn’t include him or Jeff Daniels), Sonic the Hedgehog, and he has announced he will make a sequel to 2003’s Bruce Almighty (following a Steve Carrell sequel in which he was not involved). It seems almost inevitable that Jim Carrey will appear in The Grinch 2.
Having to wear prosthetics for hours was reportedly driving Jim Carrey (and his makeup artist) nearly insane during the 2000 version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, directed by Ron Howard. Nevertheless, the movie made $345 million dollars and was the second-highest-grossing Christmas movie after Home Alone for many years until Benedict Cumberbatch‘s animated version overtook it. A sequel to The Grinch 2 was only a matter of time with a box office gross like that.
Jim Carrey may return for The Grinch 2 for a new Christmas story, possibly involving the Grinch defending Christmas from some new threat in order to turn the tables, but it doesn’t have to be like that. There is also the little-remembered 1977 ABC animated special Halloween Is Grinch Night, in which the residents of Whoville are terrorized by the mountain-dwelling misanthrope on Halloween. Despite having to go through the makeup again, we’d like to see a Jim Carrey film.
