Tim Allen has confirmed that Buzz Lightyear and Woody will return in the upcoming fifth installment of the Toy Story franchise ‘Toy Story 5’ The news was announced on Twitter by Allen, who voices Buzz. “See ya soon Woody!” he wrote, in a tweet that incorporated two of Buzz’s most famous quotes, including his catchphrase, “To infinity and beyond!” The last time Buzz and Woody appeared on the big screen was in 2019’s Toy Story 4. He was unable to elaborate on how Toy Story 5 will reunite Buzz and Woody, nor did he confirm whether Tom Hanks would return to the role of Woody.

Earlier this week, Disney’s CEO Bob Iger revealed that several of the studio’s biggest animated franchises are currently being developed as sequels. Allen’s tweet follows that announcement. In addition to Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia will also receive new entries.Toy Story 5 won’t continue the previous four films’ narrative or introduce a new group of characters, according to Iger. According to Allen’s tweet, the latter is true.

With Allen returning as Buzz, it’s clear that the fifth Toy Story won’t be a sequel to 2022’s Lightyear. In that movie, Chris Evans replaced Allen as Buzz in a separate continuity. Afterward, Allen expressed confusion about Lightyear’s premise and questioned the decision to tell a Toy Story story without Buzz and Woody. “There’s really no Toy Story Buzz without Woody,” he said. Tom Hanks also stated that he couldn’t understand why Disney didn’t invite Allen to voice Buzz in Lightyear, echoing Allen’s sentiments.
Hanks also discussed how he was captivated by the ground-breaking CGI in the original Toy Story film that convinced him to lend his voice. “The computer-generated animation itself had a look that was hyperreal, you know?” he said. “But then also the marriage of the outraged voice of mine inside this outraged body of a toy was — I mean, it was just undeniably great. So I was in from the get-go. They invited me over to sort of explain this odd unknown quantity of something that may or may not work. And I said, ‘Well, it looks fine to me. Let’s do it!’ And thus it began.”
