The fact that Velma is gay has long been a secret among “Scooby-Doo” fans and creatives. In addition to James Gunn, who wrote the early live-action films, and Tony Cervone, who served as supervising producer on “Mystery Incorporated,” the character has been confirmed to be gay, but it has never been acknowledged onscreen until now as Velma Is Officially A Lesbian.
“OMG LESBIAN VELMA FINALLY,” reads one tweet, which has over 100,000 likes.

During the live-action movies, Gunn tweets that he “tried” to portray Velma as a lesbian. “Velma was explicitly gay in my first draft in 2001,” he wrote. In the final version, the studio watered it down & watered it down, resulting in ambiguity (the shot), nothing (the released version) & finally a boyfriend (the sequel).”
