Despite a convoluted, multi-faceted fantasy storyline, The Witcher’s showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has managed to sustain and surpass the momentum of a truly wonderful first season.
‘Witcher’ Geralt of Rivia, a biogenetically engineered warrior forever tasked with hunting down this magical realm’s numerous monsters, returns to the big screen as Henry Cavill.

Our ashen-haired brute is given the additional responsibility of acting as a father figure to the exiled Princess Cirilla, played by an excellent Freya Allan. The unlikely pair will have to travel the length of the continent, avoiding monsters and agents of ambitious royals who will stop at nothing to eliminate the young royal.

Season 2 further deepens the political intrigues as we meet new characters, with Graham McTavish relishing his role as Djikstra, the chief advisor to the Redanian kingdom. Farren continues the same vein of devilishness as ‘Cahir’ that we saw in season 1, showing us more of Nilfgaard’s hitherto unknown and ultra-secret royals.

With its excellent CGI and detailed fight sequences, The Witcher stands out from similar fantasy games like Wheel of Time and Shadow and Bone.
Audiences are greatly engaged by the sheer size, grandeur, and largesse of this universe. This is like watching a big-budget film split into 6 episodes.

However, I felt that Anya Chalotra (Yennefer), who was the life force of season 1, was given a much more subdued role this time around, and I hope her narrative will carry more weight in the next installment. The makers should have included more hand-to-hand, duel-to-the-death style fight sequences, as we so enjoyed in Season 1, with Henry Cavill in full flow.
In my opinion, it is a testament to the writers’ and directors’ abilities that they managed to condense six novels and 15 short stories into two action-packed seasons. The Witcher ends with a twist that leaves you hanging on the precipice of unrealistically large expectations for Season 3.

Season 2 of this worldwide phenomenon has surpassed the expectations of ardent fans of both the books and video games. Even for me, as a fan of only the TV series without any knowledge of the canon, it was an enthralling visual as well as emotional experience.

(During the wait for the next season of The Witcher, one can also look forward to Blood Origin, a prequel set 1200 years beforehand. The post-credit sequence featured Michelle Yeoh, so it’s truly the season to be jolly!)
