There is no doubt that Lord of the Rings is beloved by millions of fans around the world. Tolkien’s love is not going anywhere anytime soon, with a bunch of new Tolkien books still being released, and an entire new series coming from Amazon Studios. It is completely up in the air at this point whether or not it lives up to the films and whether or not it will be worth the reported $1 billion investment from Amazon, and we’re both incredibly excited and extremely nervous to see what will become of this new take on J.R.R. Tolkien’s acclaimed fantasy series and its surrounding mythos. At the moment, however, we’re going to look back at these famous and endearing characters, picking our favorites among them, while also explaining why we loved them throughout this beloved trilogy until the end.
7. Gimli (John Rhys-Davies)
I would describe Gimli as a fierce warrior who isn’t afraid of anyone or anything. In addition, he has a fiery and vivacious personality, which provides warmth, optimism, and life to the Fellowship.
In my opinion, it is wonderful that he joined the Fellowship because he distrusted Legolas, and then became best friends with him. I really enjoy their friendship, and I will never get tired of watching them kill orcs and compete with each other in battle.
In spite of his quiet reputation, Legolas always manages to keep himself in the spotlight with his kindness, confidence, and willingness to learn. With his bow, he’s practically a superhero, and he’s not too shabby when it comes to daggers and swords either. His real power lies in his ability to stay open and adjust his opinions based on experience, not hearsay, rather than his ability to remain open.
In this way he overcomes his initial distrust of dwarves, turning his rivalry with Gimli into one of the most wonderful friendships of his life.
5. Gollum (Andy Serkis)
It is only because of Andy Serkis’ motion capture performance that Gollum can be regarded as one of this trilogy’s greatest characters. Even though he is technically a villain, Gollum is a misunderstood creature with deep emotional scars that we can sympathize with due to the trauma and anguish he has had to endure.
There is no doubt that Gollum plays a crucial part in the story, which makes him arguably one of the most important characters in the movie. In spite of this, Gollum became a favorite for many because Andy played him so well, giving him lots of personality with his speech and movements.
Frodo shows real grit by volunteering to be the Ring-bearer and even trying to go it alone when he realizes that the One Ring corrupts each and every one who comes in contact with it.
It is he who bears the brunt of the One Ring, and many of the wounds he receives on the quest never heal. The truth is that his success is largely a team success, as he would not have reached Mount Doom without the help of his friends.
3. Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin)
There is no doubt that, of all the pivotal characters in The Lord of the Rings, Samwise the Good should stand out as having the most loving, fulfilling and important narrative progressions found within the trilogy.
It would seem that Sam is one of the few characters who feels fully-realized when his journey comes to an end at the end of The Return of the King, and it’s clear that his experiences turn him not only into a moral and noble hobbit, but a great and essential one. In J.R.R. Tolkien’s view, Samwise is the character who is the “chief hero” of the story, and the person without whom the quest would not be successful. We are fully convinced of this.
The character of Aragorn is a character filled with great strength, valor, and nobility, and he is a hero who can provide inspiration and guidance to people.
As played with great splendor by Viggo Mortensen, Aragorn is a character who is captivating, commanding, compelling and yet filled with a sense of resolution that feels fitting and formidable as we follow him throughout these three intertwined films. As a result, it’s easy to see why he rises to greatness, and why movie viewers continue to watch him do just that in rewatches.
1. Gandalf (Ian McKellen)
It had to be Gandalf the Grey as our number one pick. When the situation demands it, he does not only wield magic like a boss, but he also has no problem physically grappling with the enemy when needed. Despite the fact that he seems to have a hint of mischief about him, perhaps this is why he always recruits hobbits for his missions.
There is no doubt that Gandalf is always focused on the task at hand, even if it may not seem like it at the time. Despite the fact that he may drop everything to investigate a clue at zero notice, he has a knack of showing up just at the right moment, usually with panache, like flying in on giant eagles.
