Filming on the new Hellboy film will begin next month with a script co-written by the comic’s creator.
Nearly two decades after the release of Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy, the character is getting another reboot. According to Deadline, Millennium Media has confirmed Hellboy: The Crooked Man will begin production in Bulgaria next month. The cast for the title character (originally played by Ron Perlman and then David Harbour) has not yet been announced, but Brian Taylor, who directed the Jason Statham action movie Crank, will direct the new film.
The script for the upcoming film was co-written by the comic’s original creator Mike Mignola and Chris Golden. The Hollywood Reporter reported that both Cosby and Williams worked on the 2019 reboot script, though Andrew Cosby is credited with writing it alone. On a budget of $50 million, the 2019 reboot grossed roughly $55 million at the box office, a commercial and critical failure.
According to Discussing Film – which originally reported news of The Crooked Man’s production – the film will be live-action.Originally, the Crooked Man was the title of a Hellboy comic from 2008. According to Deadline, here is a synopsis of the film:
“The new film will see Hellboy and a rookie BPRD agent stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: The Crooked Man.”
Unlike previous Hellboy films, “The Crooked Man presents an authentic version of Mike Mignola’s stories and characters,” said Millennium Media president Jeffrey Greenstein. It is the first in a series of films that will captivate audiences in familiar (and new) ways.
It has yet to be announced when Hellboy: The Crooked Man will be released.
