Blumhouse’s Spawn reboot has been in development for decades, but after so many years there’s much to discuss around Jamie Foxx’s debut as Spawn. Todd McFarlane’s Spawn, introduced by Image Comics in 1992’s Spawn #1, is one of the most recognizable comic book characters not owned by Marvel or DC. There have been several adaptations of Spawn, including a critically acclaimed animated TV series and a less-than-critically acclaimed live-action film.

Spawn, starring Michael Jai White as Al Simmons/Spawn, wasn’t the commercial success New Line Cinema had hoped, but it gained a cult following over time. The franchise has held its interest, and Todd McFarlane is now collaborating with Blumhouse to reboot Spawn. As Spawn, Jamie Foxx is taking over the role, and there’s already a lot of progress being made on one of the longest-gestating comic book movies ever.

There has been steady news regarding the reboot, and Todd McFarlane has provided an update on the development of Spawn. If Hollywood fails to fund the Spawn reboot soon, the project will have to find an investor elsewhere, according to the comic book legend.

In an attempt to remain within Hollywood’s traditional structure, McFarlane expressed confidence in his producer, saying, “Jason Blum is one of the best in the business.”. McFarlane also mentioned seeing the script for the first time, suggesting that behind-the-scenes work is progressing.

Todd McFarlane first announced Spawn in 1998, but it wasn’t until Blumhouse became involved in 2017 that the project gained momentum. It would take Blumhouse another three years before it confirmed Spawn’s reboot was in active development, in 2020.

The release date for Spawn reboot movie is set for 2025. While an exact release date has not yet been announced, veteran producer Jason Blum reaffirmed in September 2023 that Jamie Foxx’s Spawn movie would arrive as scheduled despite delays. “2025 is when Spawn is going to come out. I stand by that.” Blum restated to Comicbook.com in September 2023. Spawn’s reboot was also delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, as well as Jamie Foxx’s health problems.

Blumhouse is rebooting Spawn with Jamie Foxx directing. Known for films like Django Unchained and Ray, as well as Strays and Day Shift, Foxx has several major hits to his credit. His character is Al Simmons, who becomes Spawn the anti-hero. In addition to Jamie Foxx, there have not been any further casting announcements, such as who will play Violator in the reboot. However, Todd McFarlane has teased the movie will feature more A-Listers.

Spawn’s story will likely follow this basic premise, but the character has much more nuance and depth. His comics attracted attention because he epitomized the brooding 90s antihero, and they were unlike anything Marvel or DC published at the time. The 1997 movie wasn’t the blockbuster success McFarlane hoped, but Blumhouse’s Spawn reboot could finally make the demonic hero a hit.
