It was greed that drove Benni Gabo to become a thief. During their search for the City of the Death, he guides Rick O’Connell and his companions into the desert. Since he merely wanted to extort money from Americans and kill them, his intentions were less than honorable.
Benni, however, is forced to accompany them regardless because O’Connell refuses to pay him only half of his fee in advance. As a result, he agrees to serve Imhotep, and the two of them cause havoc all the way to Cairo. His only source of light goes out when he gets trapped in a pyramid, where he meets his end due to deadly carnivorous scarabs. You can watch the scene below:
