Tonight, The Game Awards 2021 revealed the first Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie trailer.

In May 2020, the sequel was first announced, only a couple of months after the predecessor opened to $319.7 million at the box office. It is now the most successful video game movie of all time and one of the biggest hits of the year. Since the movie was announced, we have seen nothing but its official poster, but tonight that changed.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 picks up after the events of Sonic the Hedgehog and depicts Sonic alone in the Green Hills while Tom and Maddie Wachowski are on vacation. The movie ends with the return of Doctor Eggman, who is searching for the Master Emerald with the help of Knuckles the Echidna, who wasn’t in the first movie.

Miles “Tails” Prower was also absent from the first movie, but he joins Sonic to stop Doctor Eggman and Knuckle.

Could A ‘Secret Wars’ Movie Be On The Way?

It will always be argued that Sonic isn’t the best video game movie to date, but its competition is so slim that it is certainly debatable,”  reads a quote from our review of the first film. Because Sonic the Hedgehog captures the spirit of the games and the character, it succeeds where so many other video game adaptations fail.

Even though it’s not a 1:1 adaptation of the games, Sonic’s personality and need for adventure are well-represented, and the good-natured narrative at its center is wholesome and heartwarming. “The movie sets up a sequel to the movie that I will certainly be eager to see, since this is a world that I could find endearing and enjoyable for a long time to come, which isn’t the case for so many other kid movies.”
