Keanu Reeves is returning to play DC’s John Constantine in Constantine 2, a sequel to the 2005 film, and it was officially announced last year. However, you may wonder if those plans have changed since James Gunn and Peter Safran are reorganizing the DC Cinematic Universe. What’s the good news? That’s right, Constantine 2 is still happening!
Previously a Warner Bros. spokesperson stated that Constantine 2 hasn’t been scrapped. We can now confirm that this is untrue and that the sequel will be going ahead. Although there is no word on whether Constantine 2 will be part of the mainline DC Universe or if it will exist in the “Elseworlds” universe, it’s great to hear that it is still in the works. The brand-new Constantine adventure will be directed by Francis Lawrence.
Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as the supernatural exorcist and demonologist John Constantine, who is dying but stays to save his soul by preventing demons from hell from breaching earth in the original. Also, he gets caught up in a battle between Gabriel and Lucifer.” Besides J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella of Bad Robot, Akiva Goldsman will write the screenplay and produce the project through his Weed Road Pictures.
With Constantine’s fan following over the years and Keanu Reeves’s career booming thanks to the John Wick movies, it’s not surprising Warner Bros. wants to bring back the DC character. In 2005, the movie made $230 million worldwide, despite a production budget of $100 million.
NBC’s short-lived “Constantine,” was a major success thanks to a powerful Matt Ryan voiceover performance. The actor has since played the role in various other live-action and animated projects. As good as Matt has been, we can’t wait to see Keanu Reeves back in the hot seat.
