The creator and director of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, is currently working hard on ways to exceed the ludicrous expectations laid down by Netflix’s season of the show. The actor has revealed that, while nothing is yet concrete, he does have a basic plot in mind that is ready when Netflix gives the official green light to Squid Game Season 2.

It’s amazing how many questions I’ve been getting about season 2. As you can imagine, I’ve been getting a lot of comments and questions, but I do have a basic idea of what the storyline will be. I’m currently brainstorming the details, but nothing concrete has been decided yet in terms of when season 2 will be available on Netflix or how it will turn out, so I’ll just say here that I do have a basic idea of what the storyline is.”

The way Hwang approaches the second season is that he is directly addressing audience expectations, even turning to YouTube to watch fan videos discussing theories and ideas. With the first season of Squid Game becoming Netflix’s most watched series to date, there is obviously significant pressure on Hwang to deliver on that promise, but even with such overwhelming hype, he hopes to go above and beyond what fans have been expecting.
When I look at what fans expect, it’s hard to answer. I go on YouTube and see all of these fans imagining what the second season will be like and their imaginations are really running wild. If a second season is announced, I think I will stick with the basic storyline I have in mind. As a result, I can only hope that this film will not only meet the fans’ expectations but will go beyond them as well. I am convinced that the fans’ expectations are going to be enormous and very diverse, as a result of which it will be very difficult to pinpoint precisely what they want.”

The Squid Game was initially designed to be a one-off limited series, but because of its sheer popularity, it quickly led to discussions about a second season, although Hwang was unsure if he wanted to return. It was all about to change recently when the creator announced that, after a brief pause, he was ready to continue the story. So overall, there has been such a strong desire for a second season, such a strong demand and such a strong love for the show,” Hwang said to the Associated Press during an interview. As such, I almost think that you have left us with no other choice! But I will assure you there will indeed be a second season. It’s on my mind right now. I’m currently in the planning stages. But it’s too early to say when and how it will take place. But I will promise you this… Gi-hun will come back, he’ll do something for the world.”
