Disney and Lucasfilm keep the plot of Obi Wan McGregor’s adventures close to the vest, but here is what’s known so far. Approximately ten years after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith ended in 2005, the show will take place. As well as picking up with a lonelier Obi-Wan who is now in exile on Tatooine watching over Luke Skywalker, the series will continue one of the most popular stories in the prequel trilogy. One of the greatest rivalries in Star Wars lore is Obi-Wan versus Darth Vader, which Kathleen Kennedy described as “the rematch of the century.”
A hater of sand because “it’s coarse and rough and irritating” Hayden Christensen will make his return as the ominous Darth Vader; the reports are rife that Vader will attempt to find his “Old Friend”. There are rumors (and this is possible considering the time frame) that a young Luke Skywalker will be seen in the movie. Ewan teased the fans on the topic by saying “I have no idea.” McGregor himself has even teased that they will have “another swing at each other” during the events of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Fear not, children, those of you who cannot even look at the attack of the clones due to the overegged use of greenscreen. McGregor explained that the virtual backgrounds will be projected onto a gigantic LED screen, revealing that Obi-Wan Kenobi will employ StageCraft technology as seen on The Mandalorian. It will feel so much more real if you’re in the middle of a desert, in the snow, or in the cockpit of a starfighter.
“Just being a Jedi, it’s not safe” Deborah Chow, director for The Mandalorian and Better Call Saul, has also given some insight into the show’s setting. With filming underway, we can expect to hear more about the series soon. Disney + is expected to debut Obi-Wan Kenobi sometime in 2022.
There is also a third season of The Mandalorian planned for Disney+, as well as The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka Tano.
