The prequel will take place 40 years before the first movie and consist of three 90-minute episodes set in ‘crumbling 1970s New York’. Kevin Beggs, chairman of Lionsgate Television, recently explained to Deadline that The Continental will examine the hotel’s history all the way back to the 1970s.

“The novel was so thrilling to us because it tackled so many problems and was so exciting. It spoke of a crumbling New York in the 1970s, with a garbage strike and bags of garbage piling up on the third floor of many brownstones, and a mafia that got into the garbage business.. This is why in The Sopranos, Tony is in the sanitation business, and other things that are truly real to explore the origins of the Continental, which in the movie franchise is known as the assassin’s hotel, where you cannot kill anyone. Nevertheless, you’re fair game if you step one foot off, and that is fully utilized in many of the movie plots. Running all of that is Winston.”
