The post-apocalyptic thriller I Am Legend will be followed by a sequel. ‘I Am Legend 2’ The Hollywood Reporter reports that Warner Bros is moving ahead with a sequel with Will Smith returning and Michael B. Jordan to star and produce alongside Smith. It will be their first big project together as stars and producers.

The previous film adaptation was written by Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman, who will also write and produce this sequel with Smith and Jordan. They have reportedly already closed all three of their deals, making this project a go. As of yet, no director has been attached to the film, which was directed by Francis Lawrence. Jordan is producing the film with Elizabeth Raposo under their Outlier Society banner. Smith will produce the film with Westbrook Studios Co-President and Head of Motion Pictures, Jon Mone, with Westbrook Studios’ Ryan Shimazaki overseeing. Weed Road Pictures’ Goldsman and Lessans will produce the film with James Lassiter as executive producer.
I Am Legend, based on Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel of the same name, was released in 2007. The film is set in a world ravaged by a virus that has wiped out most of humanity, leaving virologist Robert Neville (Will Smith) as one of the last humans. Aside from his dog and mannequins, Neville must also defend himself against hostile mutants. Also starring were Alice Braga, Charlie Tahan, and Dash Mihok.

The plot of the new I Am Legend has not been revealed. Earlier reports suggested that a new movie was in production, but it was unclear what this new take would be like. Will Smith teased a follow-up film in 2008, which at the time was being considered a prequel. According to that concept, Smith would have gone from New York City to Washington D.C. for his last stand.

Another I Am Legend movie was reportedly in development in 2014. There was a rumor at the time that it would not include Smith, but would be a reboot with a new leading character. A spec script for another story called A Garden at the End of the World was to be retrofitted to fit the I Am Legend storyline. This version of the film never materialized, as well, for better or for worse.

With Smith on board for this next sequel, along with Michael B. Jordan, it seems likely that it will actually happen this time. It is unclear when filming may begin or when fans can expect to see the new movie, but for those who have been waiting for an update to I Am Legend, this is certainly welcome news.
