‘Superbad’ a film that defined a generation but it’s still a bold claim, especially since teen comedies have seen a big comeback thanks to streaming services like Netflix and filmmakers pushing the genre forward. Rogen may have a bone to pick with fans of acclaimed high school flicks like To All the Boys I Loved Before, Dope, and Booksmart. In a new interview with People, the 40-year-old actor and comedian discussed the lasting impact of the Judd Apatow-directed film.
In an interview with Rogen, he said his 20-year-old co-star Gabe Labelle was full of praise for the movie. “What’s crazy is that Gabe LaBelle is like, 19 years old and his and his friends’ favourite movie is Superbad,” he told the outlet. “So it never changed for some reason. No one’s made a good high school movie since then.”
People on social media disagree with Superbad despite it being loved by many.
One film fan tweeted, “Guess he never heard of Booksmart.”.
In a tweet, another fan of the Olivia Wilde-directed 2019 film shared a compilation of scenes starring Billie Lourd as Gigi: “This 2 minute clip of Gigi from Booksmart is more iconic than the entirety of Superbad.”
Third Twitter user said: “Project X, The Duff, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Easy A, and Edge of Seventeen are all vastly superior to Superbad, but whatever.”
According to one fan, “There have been good high school movies, but Superbad is still the best.” Another film fan ripped into Booksmart, writing: “Y’all are screaming about Booksmart… a Superbad rip-off.”
As one of the highest-earning comedies of the 2000s, Superbad earned more than $170.8 million (£141.7m). For the millennial generation, it has become a pivotal movie since its release. The screenplay was written by Rogen and his best friend Evan Goldberg, who wanted to make their own movie.
Their high school experiences inspired Superbad because they couldn’t relate to ’90s movies. Many of the characters in the feature were inspired by people they grew up with, such as Dan Remick and Mike Snider. Michael Cera, best known for his role as George Michael Bluth in Arrested Development, co-starred in the film with Rogen and Jonah Hill. The following year, Cera starred in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which became his breakout role. The film also stars Bill Hader, Emma Stone, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.
