The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special has one of the highest Rotten Tomatoes scores in the MCU

Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special has been another huge Disney+ hit.

Marvel Studios’ Phase 4 movie releases may not have been some of the best-reviewed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but its Special Presentations have been spot-on. A hugely popular and highly praised release, Werewolf by Night, has been followed by Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Rotten Tomatoes has rated the Disney+ special as one of the best MCU projects ever.

Gunn is on his way out of the Marvel franchise as he takes on the huge task of making the DC Universe a cohesive money-spinner, but he will certainly not leave without proving why he is more than up for the challenge. Having provided some guidance for Thor: Love and Thunder, the writer/director seems to have hit the mark with the Guardians Holiday Special in advance of his third and final Guardians of the Galaxy film next summer.

Averaging 83% across the entire MCU, the Guardians Holiday Special has landed a massive 93% score to place it in some of the top-rated MCU projects ever, tied with Thor: Ragnarok and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Based on Top Critic scores, the special has a perfect 100% approval rating. It is also the highest-rated Guardians of the Galaxy installment to date, a positive sign for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. In the next year, we will see the third in the series.

What is the tone of Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 3?

Fans shouldn’t expect the same level of joviality from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 as they did from the Holiday Special. James Gunn has already teased a change in tone for the last Guardians movie, which promises to be more emotional than any of the others. As he previously stated:

” Guardians of The Galaxy Volume 3 is as usual a fun and goofy movie, but it’s also very emotionally moving. It is the end of the story for this group of Guardians, so there was a lot of emotion involved. Most of the time, it was very serious. Chris Pratt, in particular, pushed himself a lot. The weight was heavy. We get to see the end of Vol 3 by going back to the beginning. Rocket’s character and who he is are important to us. For the sake of these characters and for the fans, it was just important to me that it worked. Due to this, I gave it my all.”

For now, fans are enjoying the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, and that will only make what is to come even bittersweet when MCU fans have to say goodbye to some of their favorite characters in Guardians of the Galaxy. May 5, 2023 is the release date for Vol 3.
