Wolverine was losing his mutant healing factor in Logan’s dark future timeline. Logan became ill as a result of his powers failing him. In Logan, a Wolverine living in the future is seen gradually losing his healing factor, allowing him to die tragically. The R-rated and Academy Award-nominated Logan, directed by James Mangold, marked Hugh Jackman’s final appearance as the Wolverine (things may be about to change in Deadpool 3) after a memorable and beloved run as one of the main characters in the FOX X-Men film franchise. Despite laying the groundwork for an explanation, Logan never explicitly reveals why Wolverine lost his healing power.

Logan is set in 2029, in a hypothetical timeline in which most X-Men have died. In the previous 25 years, no new mutants were known to have been born, and the Transigen corporation hunts survivors for their genetic material. Logan shows us Wolverine, the ex-mutant superhero, making a living as a chauffeur and caring for the ailing Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), who is dying of degenerative brain disease. When Wolverine is assigned to care for a young mutant girl named Laura (Dafne Keene), the three flee in search of a fabled mutant sanctuary while being pursued by Transigen’s cybernetic mercenaries.

Wolverine’s most notable ability, aside from his trademark claws, is superhuman healing. He can withstand fatal injuries with ease, including taking a bullet to the head and being completely vaporized by Jean Grey in X-Men: The Last Stand. This is not the case in Logan. Wolverine is shown to suffer greatly when injured from the start of the film, and his healing factor is so low that he’s only nominally more durable than a regular human. By Logan’s timeline, even popping his claws hurts Wolverine. Despite the fact that the film is set in the future, Logan has lived for centuries without incident.

Wolverine was born in Canada in 1832, making him older than Captain America. This is only possible because of his mutant talent, which gave him a powerful healing factor that, for a while, created the impression that he was practically invincible. However, in Logan, the true cost of Adamantium-coated bones is revealed. The doctor informed him that he was really being poisoned from the inside out and that something in his body was killing him. Logan was unsurprised by this and continued to maintain his stoic composure because he already believed that the Adamantium the Weapon X program had covered his bones with was the root of his illness. It is unknown how long Wolverine might have lived if not for the government’s experimenting on him, which made him a potent weapon but also caused his final death.

There are no practical major medical facilities for mutants in the Fox X-Men universe at the time of Logan, and even if there were, it has already been established that the bonding of the Adamantium onto Wolverine’s bones cannot be reversed. After a life of suffering, the mutant was ready for death to finally occur by the time Logan came to an end because his low healing factor could no longer save him. Hugh Jackman (allegedly) left his role as Wolverine as Logan passed away from his deadly wounds at that point, but not before Logan carried out one more brave deed by saving Laura and the survival of the mutant race.
