For a long time, there has been little information on what, if anything, is going on with the Planet of The Apes franchise since the most recent instalment debuted in cinemas five years ago. Studio head Steve Asbell revealed that Planet of the Apes 4 is hoping to get cameras rolling later this year under the direction of Wes Bell during a discussion about several 20th Century Studio upgrades with The Hollywood Reporter.

The Planet of The Apes franchise began in 1968, with an adaption of Pierre Boulle’s book starring Charlton Heston and including one of the most unlikely and renowned cinematic endings ever, as an astronaut who crashes on a planet populated by walking, talking apes discovers that the planet is actually Earth. The series was nearly 30 years without being touched until Tim Burton decided to remake the film after four sequels. The remake was a fair success, but the series remained dormant for another decade before Rise of The Planet of The Apes, which premiered in 2011 and kicked off a trilogy of films that drew aspects from the original while also creating a history for it.

A fourth Planet of the Apes film is still in development, according to Asbell, who asked whether or not the picture’s production is currently underway. “We are anticipating a draft soon, and Wes Ball is attached to direct,” Asbell stated in response. We aim to travel in the late summer or early fall.

The Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which was released in 2011, followed the journey of a group of smart apes as a result of scientific research. A raged for survival begins with the death of leader Caesar, but also brings into action his youngest son Cornelius, a name that appears in the original series of films as Dr. Cornelius Apes. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes were released in 2014 and 2017, respectively, with Caesar’s timeline moving into the future. Charlton Heston’s character encounters Cornelius in this film. This seems to be the same character, given that the films serve as prequels as well as remakes.

Wes Bell takes over as director for Matt Reeves, who directed the previous two Batman films. It is unclear how the new film will connect to the older ones, or if it will connect to the 1968 film. Moreover, it is a mystery who, if anybody, will be reprising their parts in the fourth film after five years since the debut of War for the Planet of the Apes. Everything will be revealed in time, but it appears that the picture is currently traveling in the correct direction, at least for now.
