Many family names can be traced back to historic eras of filmmaking within the art of filmmaking. Names like the Coppolas, Stillers, Wayans, Smiths, Arquettes, Sutherlands, and Baldwins all come to mind when one thinks of families with actors in both fronts and behind the camera.
Many names have begun to establish solid rapport, continuing a line of credible filmmaking. As a family, the Skarsgrds deserve to be included among names like those previously mentioned. In front of the camera, the Skarsgrds have shown versatility as individuals and as a group.
Stellan Skarsgard is the patriarch of the Skarsgrd family, which includes Alexander, Gustaf, Sam, Bill, Eija, Valter, Ossian, and Kolbjörn. Over the years, half of those children have followed Stellan’s footsteps in the film industry. Others have experimented with their artistic passions in other ways, such as modeling.

Both English and Swedish projects have been successful for him. Among his many credits are Good Will Hunting, Pirates of the Caribbean, Mamma Mia!, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Stellan appeared in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune in 2021 as the terrifying Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. As Erik Selvig, he has also appeared in Thor, The Avengers, Thor: Dark World, and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Alexander Skarsgård
Like his father, Alexander Skarsgård has excelled in both English and Swedish projects. As a young actor, he appeared in Zoolander with Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, and Ben Stiller. Alexander starred in Melancholia, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011, alongside Kirsten Dunst and his father Stellan. Alexander is perhaps best known for his role as Eric Northman in True Blood, which led to dozens of other roles for him. He joined the cast of Big Little Lies in 2017 as Nicole Kidman’s husband. Recently, he starred alongside Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga in Passing.

Gustaf Skarsgård
In addition to being the family’s second-eldest son, he has also been successful in his acting career. As Floki, Gustaf played a major role in Vikings, a television historical drama series from 2013-2020. As Karl Strand, Gustaf has also appeared in Westworld. In 2003, Gustaf starred in the drama Evil, the same project his father and brother starred in. His most recent Netflix series was Cursed as Merlin, and he will next appear in The Emigrants, a Swedish drama.
Bill Skarsgård
Bill Skarsgård has become well-known in recent years. As an actor, Bill has appeared in a variety of genres, including action, drama, comedy, and horror
Divergent, Atomic Blonde, Villains, and The Devil All the Time are among his credits. In addition to his work on countless horror projects, Bill has also been credited with scaring both children and adults.
In addition to Hemlock Grove, he starred in Castle Rock, a psychological thriller series on Netflix. In the 2017 and 2019 adaptations of Stephen King’s It, Bill most notably plays Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Even though the sequel received mixed reviews, Bill’s performance was highly praised.

Valter Skarsgård
In addition to being an actor, Valter is Stellan’s youngest child with his first wife. Several of his roles have been in Swedish films, including the short To Kill a Child. His older brother Alexander directed the short film and his father Stellan narrated it.
As individuals, each of their performances is unique due to the range they each bring to the roles they choose. Although they spend most of their time in front of the camera, some of them are also capable of directing and writing their own projects. The Skarsgrds are one of the most flexible filmmaking families today because of their skills.
