It seems like we have been waiting for a very long time to see Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel Dune. The project was originally announced back in late 2016 and would have already been released if it weren’t for the Coronavirus outbreak.
DUNE tells the story of the House Atreides, who are granted control over the desolate desert planet Arrakis, but who are secretly being targeted for destruction. Throughout the story, Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) serves as the protagonist, a teenage boy who possesses wisdom beyond his years and strange powers that he is unsure he understands.

Apparently this is not the first time a film adaptation of the source material has been attempted – legendary filmmaker David Lynch made a version of the film back in 1984, but it was a rare critical failure for the director and saw major failures at the box office. But despite claims that the novel might not be able to be adapted into a film, the first trailer has given fans cautious optimism that Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Arrival) might just have what it takes to adapt Frank Herbert’s vision into a film.

‘Dune’ is one of those sci-fi epics that has so much intrigue and detail that fans are already wondering about the sequel, and it looks like this will just be the first in a series, as Eric Roth announced in April 2021 that he has already written a treatment for the potential sequel- but it hasn’t been officially announced yet.

Here’s everything you need to know about Dune, including when you can see it this year at the cinema. Dune will be available in the UK on the 1st October, 2021. Despite Warner Bros reversing their earlier decision to release the movie exclusively on HBO Max, the film will theoretically be released both on HBO, and also on HBO Max, on the same day in the US.
