No way! Absolutely not! You never say ‘yes’ to a stranger with promises. This is especially true if the man is a pale-faced, top-hatted Ethan Hawke while a seriously spooky theme from Alan J. Pakula’s Klute plays in the background.

There is a new trailer for The Black Phone in which Mason Thames is among the cast as Finney Shaw, a kid abducted by Hawke’s character, known only as ‘The Grabber.’ Shaw has been trying to escape the Grabber’s basement with the help of the room’s former occupants, communicating through a broken black phone from the other side.

Even though it has become so commonplace in the genre that we don’t even notice how creepy it is, there’s something so instinctively disturbing about the mask. In its combination of frozen emotion and hidden deflection, it causes a spike in our collective cerebellums and floods us with adrenaline. This pock-marked, faded yellow-green, horn-rimmed Grabber mask with a Joker-grin in The Black Phone is on the list of the most horrifying masks ever made. It is Hawke who doubles down on this creep with his insistent, wheedling rasp beneath the psycho smile.

This story is a twist on the typical tale of a twisted man with the twist that despite living in a madman’s basement, Shaw has the help of the ghosts of the Grabber’s victims. As another seat-flinching trailer moment unfolds, the boy answers the phone, unaware of a bloody peer sitting behind him.

It follows Finney’s perspective throughout the narrative – his family and personal life before he becomes the kidnapper’s latest victim. In addition to having to avoid bullies at school, Finney is also required to walk on eggshells at home in order to avoid abuse by his alcoholic father. In the end, all he finds solace in is the love of his spitfire sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) who has no qualms about cussing out police or slamming a rock over a bully’s head.

It’s a reunion with director Scott Derrickson after 2012’s truly terrifying Sinister, which Hawke usually plays thoughtful characters.

Under three minutes of Black Phone not only threatens to scare folks, but also receives positive reviews from festivals like Fantastic Fest and Beyond Fest. October’s dark days made for a perfect time for Universal Pictures to release this first clip before the movie hits theaters on Feb. 4.
