You may remember many moments from The Wolf of Wall Street like you just watched it yesterday, even though the film is almost a decade old. There are unforgettably wild moments in this three-hour film, including pen-selling, dwarf-throwing, and then there’s Margot Robbie.
The success of the movie owes a great deal to the Australian actor. She was just starting out, she had been a regular on Neighbours for a few years and made a bold choice to go nude in her big breakthrough role. She is now one of the biggest stars in Hollywood.
As Naomi Lapaglia, Jordan Belfort’s second wife, Robbie portrays Naomi Lapaglia in the much-loved Martin Scorsese movie. There were numerous sexual scenes in the role, including a full-frontal nude scene, and Robbie admitted she was hesitant to immortalize them on the internet. She made the brave decision to refuse Scorsese’s suggestion to dilute the film for her comfort, in order to preserve the integrity of the movie.
When she was 23 years old, she told The Telegraph: “To me, nudity for the sake of nudity is shameful. If they’ve introduced it to get girls to take off their tops, that’s disgusting. But I also find it disgusting when people who would normally be naked leave their bras on, or hold up the bed sheet in the film. I find it just as annoying to see someone choreographed into being covered up.”
She continued: “The whole point of Naomi is that her body is her only form of currency in this world. So when Marty [Scorsese] was trying to help me out, and said in the scene where she seduces Jordan perhaps I could have a robe on, I said she wouldn’t. She has to be naked. She’s laying her cards on the table.”
Although Robbie’s commitment to authenticity is admirable, it wasn’t without difficulties and embarrassment. She reflected on the experience of shooting a memorable seduction scene in the movie in a 2018 interview with Porter: “It doesn’t come across in the movie, but in reality, we were crammed into a tiny bedroom with 30 crew members.”.
There’s just something really weird about touching yourself while pretending to be touching myself for 17 hours. It’s just so strange that you must bury your embarrassment and abhorrence really deep and commit completely to it.”
