’28 Months Later’ Danny Boyle and Cillian Murphy are close to a third movie

It looks like the script for ’28 Months Later’ has already been written by Alex Garland.

If you’re a horror fan, you’re probably familiar with Danny Boyle’s post-apocalyptic thriller 28 Days Later. Almost two decades ago, the movie was released and told the story of Jim, a bicycle messenger who awakened from a coma to find a nearly abandoned London full of zombies. In addition to cementing Boyle’s status as a filmmaker as well as Murphy’s as a star, the movie brought back the zombie subgenre to the big screen. There was also a sequel titled 28 Weeks Later, a graphic novel titled 28 Days Later: The Aftermath, and a comic book series titled 28 Days Later.

Ahead of the 20th anniversary of the original movie, Boyle and Murphy teased plans for a threequel. According to the actor, he “loves the idea, and it’s very appealing” to him and he is always thinking about making another film in the franchise. In addition, he said he showed the film to his “kids recently, around Halloween about four or five years ago, and they loved it.” He continued, “It really stands up, which is amazing for a film that’s been 20 years old.” Boyle has since gone on to direct features such as Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, and Steve Jobs, while Murphy has directed fan-favorite series such as Peaky Blinders, Inception, and Dunkirk. It’s exciting to hear that a third movie is still in the works after all these projects.

He revealed that Alex Garland, the scriptwriter for the original film, has already written the script for 28 Months Later with a “lovely idea” at its core. In addition, he expressed his excitement by saying, “I would be very tempted to direct it.”. He described the experience as a very enjoyable one. It’s funny, I hadn’t thought about it until you just mentioned it, and then I remembered Bang, this script! Once again, it is set in England, and is very much about the country.”

Due to the lack of reasons to go to the cinema nowadays, he believes the movie can come back into focus. He explained:

“One of the things that’s happening in the business at the moment is it has to be a big reason for you to go to the cinema. It’s hard for companies distributing films and for cinema chains to show films, they’re struggling to get people into the cinema unless it’s something like Top Gun: Maverick or a Marvel. But a third part would get people in, if it was half-decent.”
