Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins’ opening weekend is predicted to be beaten by The Batman’s opening weekend in just one day. Robert Pattinson stars as Bruce Wayne/Batman in the newest installment of the DC Comics Caped Crusader series, which premiered in theaters March 4, 2022. It follows Batman during his first few years as Gotham’s top vigilante justice when a serial killer known as the Riddler (Paul Dano) starts causing havoc in the city. In order to find him, he must form an uneasy truce with Catwoman (Zo* Kravitz), although their investigation will reveal some dark secrets about the Wayne family.

The Batman has landed at a crucial time for the 2022 box office. The beginning of the year has seen some wide releases, but there have been several weekends devoid of major releases. Due in part to this, Spider-Man: No Way Home was able to continue its run at #1 more or less unabated (save for one weekend where Scream 2022’s strong opening performance knocked it off the top spot). The only movies that have proven to be pandemic-proof have been superhero projects, and after Morbius moved to April to avoid interfering with Spider-Man, The Batman became the next major film in the MCU.

Deadline reports that The Batman’s Friday box office numbers are in, and the film continues its strong debut weekend, which is projected to be the best of 2022. It opened with a total of $55 million on Day 1, en route to a weekend take of $110 million or more. When Batman Begins was released in 2005, it grossed $48 million in its opening weekend. This is more than any other 2022 project to date. Uncharted came in second with $44 million, followed by Scream with $30 million.

The Batman landed the sixth-best March opening weekend of all time, competing with pre-pandemic blockbusters. It is even predicted to open higher than DC’s last big box office opener, Joker, which raked in $96.2 million in 2019. Even more impressive than this performance is that it comes just short of the $121.9 million debut of box office juggernaut Spider-Man.

The Batman is sure to have a strong performance at the box office after a strong opening and largely positive reviews. It may lose its opening weekend title to a slate of Marvel movies later in the year, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder. With a strong box office take, the new Bat universe is on track to continue with a sequel and a spinoff following Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
